About me
I am a music teacher, musician, and researcher, with experience working in schools and universities, policy making and academic research, both in Chile and abroad. From here, I have learned that music is an active part in the lives of people and communities, creating spaces for communication, aesthetic enjoyment, learning, and cultural expression. Therefore, my research lies at the intersection between music education, sociology and culture, with a particular interest in the study of cultural repertoires, socio-cultural processes and cultural diversity in local and global contexts.
Philosophy
I think of music as a space of knowledge, expression, and identity formation, capable of bringing together emotions, sensations, and thoughts in the same instant. I believe that music allows us to know the world, beyond borders imposed by time and space. It shows us the diversity in people and its communities, teaching us to respect and value it. Music challenges us, teaching us to lead and to be part of a team. It teaches us to trust ourselves and those next to us when we play together.
I understand music education widely. Learning music at school goes beyond what happens in the classroom: we learn by sharing with our classmates and friends the music we like; we learn by dancing in a celebration with people and communities; we learn when we discover the universe of sound that surrounds us, or simply by simply witnessing a musical performance. And, of course, we learn by making music, either in the depths of our thoughts or in practice with others.
Therefore, I am convinced that music has a decisive impact in our lives, and that music education, music practices, and music education research allow us to learn more about the nature of these impacts. It is here we open spaces to meet others, build bridges between people and communities, inspire ourselves and inspire others. To feel, to think, to create: therein lies the power of music.
